Why choose Dermapen?

Why choose Dermapen Skin Needling?

Dermapen is a Skin Needling device that uses multiple needles to vertically pierce the skin with advanced oscillating technology. When moved across the skin, Dermapen allows for millions of fine channels to be created in the skin. These channels can carry up to 80% more topical nutrients, allowing for transdermal delivery of these nutrients deeper into the skin to feed cells found in the dermis and basal layer of the epidermis.

Dermapen systematically creates micro-punctures in the skin and the body responds in a natural way by launching processes to repair the physical damage. The result is an increased production of normal woven collagen, similar to fractional laser treatments, but without the side effects and downtime.

Dermapen treatments have also been found to be more effective and beneficial than most microdermabrasion and chemical peels. When compared to traditional dermal rollers, Dermapen causes less epidermal (skin) damage, which reduces pain and discomfort and makes Dermapen a safer, more comfortable and more effective micro-needling treatment.

Dermapen disposable cartridges eliminate risk of cross-contamination, whilst the adjustable needle depth allows for a treatment that is fully tailored to your individual needs. Dermapen is so advanced, it is even suitable and safe to use in delicate and hard to reach areas such as those around the eyes, over the lips and on the nose.

Your clinician will assess your skin and treatment area to recommend a treatment plan and homecare routine suitable to you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many treatments are recommended? (general guide, you may require more or less treatments depending on your skin type and how severe the condition is)

Ageing: 6-8 treatments (4-6 weeks apart)

Scarring: 6-8 treatments (4-6 weeks apart)

Stretch Marks: 6-8 treatments (4-6 weeks apart)

Acne & Congestion: 6-8 treatments (2-4 weeks apart)

Pigmentation: 6-8 treatments (2-4 weeks apart)

Enlarged Pores: 6-8 treatments (4-6 weeks apart)

How do I prepare my skin for a Dermapen treatment?

You must prepare your skin using at least one active ingredient in serum form, this can be Vitamin A, Vitamin C or AHA’S and BHA’S. We recommend using a gentle cleanser, 50+ broad spectrum sunscreen, hydrating night moisturiser and a vitamin B serum both before and after your treatment for best results.

Your skin technician will perform a skin consultation to make sure you are ready for this treatment and that your skin barrier is not impaired. You must make sure you are not sunburnt before having the treatment done and if you are prone to coldsores, you can use the medication/cream before the treatment to prevent any coldsores from occurring before and after your treatment.

Exfoliate your skin before the treatment or your therapist can perform a facial/peel or microdermabrasion before your needling treatment (for clients treating scarring, ageing or pigmentation, a microdermabrasion can be performed on the day, right before the needling treatment). Your skin technician will recommend the appropriate homecare routine for you to follow before and after your treatment.

How long should it take before I see results?

Typically, you will see results after the first treatment.  Longer lasting and more significant results will become visible after 5-6 treatments (spaced 2-6 weeks apart). The condition of your skin will continue to improve over the next 6-24 months after a course of treatments, especially when combined with the recommended post treatment care.

Is the treatment painful?

For minimal needle depths, dermapen treatments are relatively painless. Treatments using depths over 0.5mm may require a topical anaesthetic cream to be applied for 15-30 minutes before the procedure. This will render the treatments virtually pain free. The topical anaesthetic is $50 extra per treatment.

Is there downtime after treatments?

Generally no, but you may experience facial redness for 12-48 hours after the treatment. Most people are able to return to normal daily activities immediately after the treatment. Some flaking and peeling can occur for a few days post treatment. No makeup is to be worn for 12 hours after the treatment.

What is the recommended aftercare?

A daily broad spectrum 50+ sunscreen must be used daily and our Vitamin B hydrating serum must be used in the morning and night. We recommend a gentle cleanser and a hydrating moisturiser for night time. Do not use any active ingredients such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C or AHA’S and BHA’S for 7 days after treatment. Do not exfoliate your skin for 7 days after treatment. Do not wear makeup, waterproof sunscreen or tinted moisturiser for 12 hours. Do not exercise for 48 hours after and be sun smart.

How soon after botox and filler can I have a Dermapen treatment?

While there is no clinical evidence that Dermapen treatments counteract with any injectables, it is important to let your clinician know if you have had an injectable treatment or are planning on having one in the near future.

Your clinician will be able to advise you on when to schedule your treatment appropriately. It is best to avoid Dermapen treatments 2 weeks before and after botox and fillers.

Check with your skin expert before proceeding with Dermapen if you are: pregnant, using blood thinners such as warfarin or if you are susceptible to keloid scarring. We DO NOT treat over keloid scars, severe acne conditions, severe solar keratosis, raised moles/warts, eczema or psoriasis.

Sue-Ann, 40

Weekly facials and fortnightly peels, and morning and night time skin routines, are an incredibly high commitment for a working mum of three but like her gym training, this was something Sue-Ann was doing for herself and over time, as her pigmentation began to visibly improve, Sue-Ann’s confidence followed.

Lee, 45

Having worked outdoors most of his life, 45 year-old plumber Lee didn’t often give much thought to his skin. And despite being committed to an active lifestyle and healthy diet, stress can wreak havoc on the best of skins. Lee’s was no different with visible signs of ageing around the eyes and cheeks, redness, uneven skin tone and dehydration apparent.

Maddison, 15

Never before have young people been under so much pressure to look picture perfect. From selfies to snapchat, social media is awash with glowing complexions however, for many, the reality speaks of a different story. When 15 year-old Maddison joined the RVR90 Skin program, her skin was visibly inflamed and sore, full of blemishes and flaky, all characteristic of acne. The amazing results achieved were astounding, to say the least, and Maddisons’ mega-watt smile says it all.

Cetaphil: The not so gentle cleanser

Why this popular cleanser isn’t doing your skin any favours

Cetaphil probably has the best advertising  out of all facial soaps. Beauty magazines and even Dermatologists recommend it as a mild and non-irritating cleanser for two reasons: it doesn’t contain fragrance and  because they have a love affair with the manufacturer, Galderma, the offspring of Nestle and Loreal, which also makes acne drugs like Differin.

There is nothing that’s good for you about this face washing prescription.

Cetaphil gentle skin cleanser contains just 8 ingredients: water, cetyl alcohol, propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulphate, stearyl alcohol, methylparaben, propylparaben and butylparaben.

Everything except the water is chemically manufactured (let’s hope!). Propylene glycol, sodium lauryl sulphate and the 3 parabens are on the DIRTY DOZEN, a list of cosmetic ingredients to avoid as they are toxic.

As a beauty therapist, you take one look at the label and you go “Wait a minute, what?”. Unfortunately consumers don’t look at labels enough or don’t know what certain ingredients are and how harmful they are.

Cetaphil doesn’t contain a single ingredient that is beneficial to your skin, infact it contains toxic ingredients. Whether you think its keeping your skin healthy and clear or not, it is absorbed into your bloodstream and research has proven that almost all of the few ingredients in this cleanser are CARCINOGENIC. I know its hard to imagine that washing your face can give you cancer but its worth your consideration.

The ingredients in this cleanser DO NOT make it a “gentle” cleanser at all.

We cannot ignore these ingredients anymore!

Cetyl alcohol is an emollient used in many cosmetics- it is essentially a wax.

Propylene glycol is a common humectant (meaning it bring moisture from the air into the skin), but it also enhances product and chemical penetration into the skin and BLOODSTREAM.

Sodium lauryl sulphate is a foaming agent and it irritates the skin and the eyes and disturbs the skins lipid barrier (strips the skin).

Parabens are a group of preservatives that are currently being phased out from skin care products due to their health risks.

There is NOTHING clean about this cleanser, yet many women and men still use it and think that their skin will freak out if they stop using it. Even if its not irritating your skin at the moment, it is certainly not helping it.

It doesn’t contain any antioxidants, any hydrating and barrier repairing ingredients, any vitamins and definitely nothing calming for a sensitive skin type. A cleanser that you use twice a day should be giving your skin something, not taking it away.

At Esha Skin and Body we actually have a range of “gentle” skin cleansers that DO NOT contain any of these harmful ingredients.

Home rolling to erase your skin’s past

What is a home roller?

A home roller is a skin needling device for at home use, that you roll over the skin to stimulate collagen and elastin production and increase cell turnover.

A home roller (needling system) works with the skin’s own renewal process to visibly improve scars, fine lines, wrinkles and imperfections. It also helps to resurface skin texture and minimize pore size.

Using a home roller will stimulate the cell turnover of your skin. By doing this, over time the epidermis will increase in thickness, which in turn will improve your skin texture and decrease the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and scars.

Home rolling also enhances the penetration of your skin care products (especially serums)in to the skin, which means that your skin is getting about 200 times more active ingredients to the deeper layers, than wouldn’t otherwise occur. This speeds up your results and gives you longer lasting, long-term results.

Here at Esha Skin and Body, we recommend the Ultraceuticals “Ultra Derma Needling System”. This comes in two different needle depths: 0.2mm and 0.5mm.

How often to use your roller:

Rollers up to 0.2mm can be used daily. The 0.5mm rollers can be used once a week or once a day for 7 consecutive days. If you have had a professional needling treatment then you must avoid home rolling for 1 week following procedure.

Does it hurt?

For most people, home rolling has a prickling feeling rather than pain.

What can I expect immediately after home rolling?

Your face will be more sensitive. You may see some redness and this may feel like sunburn. Avoid hot showers and saunas during this time.

How soon can I expect results?

This depends on what skin concern or condition your treating and how often you use the home roller. Results take time, everyone’s skin is different and true (long term) results take months – up to years.

Immediately after rolling, you should apply one of your active serums such as; Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Even Skin Tone, Brightening Serum or B2 Serum followed by your moisturizer or sun protection.

If your loving your home roller and using a Cosmeceutical Skin Care Range at home then you can take your skin to the next level with our in salon Skin Needling Treatment; Direct Needle Therapy. We use Dermapen Needling Device and Ultraceuticals Skincare for all Skin Needling Treatments.

For more information on Home Rolling or Direct Needle Therapy you can come into the salon, call us or email us.

Vitamin C in Skin Care Products

There are many different types of Vitamin C used in Skincare Products.

They can be water soluble, oil soluble, naturally stable or requiring stabilising. The solubility of the vitamin, determines which part of the cell the vitamin can enter.

Here are the different types of Vitamin C used in skincare:

  • L-Ascorbic Acid- water soluble and must be stabilised
  • Ascorbyl Palmitate- oil soluble (stable)
  • Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (MAP)- water soluble (stable)
  • Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate- water soluble (stable)

Even though some forms are naturally stable, they still degrade when exposed to light or air therefore freshness, formulation and proper storage is very important.

Although Vitamin C is a naturally occurring ingredient, it is biosynthesised in skincare, to make sure that its consistent, stable and an effective concentration.

The benefits of Vitamin C in Skincare Products:

  • It’s a tyrosinase inhibitor, therefore it brightens the skin and improves the appearance of pigmentation & sun damage
  • It stimulates the production of collagen, therefore minimising lines and wrinkles and keeping the skin firmer for longer
  • It strengthens capillary walls
  • Its a natural defence against UV Rays (although sunscreen is a must)
  • It assists the skin’s would healing process because it helps the skin form new tissue
  • It’s a powerful antioxidant & protects the skin against free radical damage
  • It firms & smooths the skin
  • It provides environmental protection
  • It helps to prevent pre-mature ageing

So why wouldn’t you want this amazing ingredient in your skincare routine?
